Vicky Brilliance faces backlash over push to have husband voted for Kalenjin Music Festival Award
Popular Kalenjin secular musician Vicky Brilliance has come under heavy criticism after urging her fans to vote for her husband, Baba Boys, in the ongoing Kalenjin Music Festival Awards 2025.
According to insiders, the couple’s potential double victory could reportedly earn them up to KSh 3 million if both secure top positions in their respective categories. However, Vicky’s move has sparked widespread backlash, with critics accusing her of greed and attempting to monopolize the awards.
Vicky, who rose to national fame after clinching two major awards last year — Best Overall Secular Artist and Secular Song of the Year for her hit track “Wababa” — has had a tumultuous year marked by controversy. Shortly after her 2024 wins, she separated from her husband, citing personal differences, a split that was accompanied by online drama and public insults that trended across social media platforms.
She later relocated to Eldoret, where sources allege she briefly stayed with an ex-boyfriend before reuniting with Baba Boys around June 2025. Their reunion, followed by her public campaign urging fans to “vote for my beb,” reignited public debate over her intentions.

Fans and Critics React
While some fans expressed support for the couple’s teamwork, others accused Vicky of turning the awards into a “family business.”
“This family is really turning the festival into their home project — aki ambition imezidi dosage!” commented
“Let’s be honest, with the way competition looks this year, they might end up influencing each other straight to ‘Better Luck Next Time Awards.’” Hon. Kiplangat Erick, a music enthusiast.
Music analyst Nick Koech Tinget described the campaign as “selfish and greedy,” claiming it undermines fair competition.
“This year’s competition — the third edition — is already one of the most controversial ever. Mambo inazidi kuchekeshwa zaidi,” he added.
Prominent critic Benta Chepngeno also weighed in, warning that Vicky’s strategy might backfire.
“Last year, she took home close to KSh 2 million. There’s nothing wrong with defending your title, but recruiting your husband as an influencer crosses the line. Whoever advised her must be her enemy—it’s working against her,” Chepngeno said.
Backlash and Aftermath
As the backlash grew, Vicky deleted all her social media posts appealing for votes for her husband. Observers say the controversy could dent her reputation ahead of the awards gala.
“There’s no difference between her and a person who unplugs another’s phone at 3% to charge theirs at 90%. It’s pure selfishness,” remarked comedian John Kitur, who likened the singer’s actions to “wanting everything for herself.”
Despite the uproar, Vicky and Baba Boys remain among the top contenders in their categories, though whether the controversy will affect their chances remains to be seen.
